A note to parents about this blog
I have written this blog to promote books to primary school girls aged 9-12 years old. Please note that the book series in this blog are designed for girls who are adventurous in their reading. I was inspired to write this blog after reading Neil Gaiman's introduction to a special edition of his book Coraline, and other stories . In this introduction he speaks enthusiastically about the need for children to read scary books. He includes a quote by Ogden Nash "Where there is a monster, there is a miracle". Although he was talking about horror, the idea still applies in a general sense. When scary things happen in a book that means there is hope, and hope is an important thing to learn.
A lot of young girls are tom boys and find it hard to find role models in books that are like them. They want to read books more like what boys are reading but they would a girl to be the hero of the book. I think it is important for young girls to have female role models
who are brave and clever.
I have tried to include some variety in these books. A couple of these series are so new that only the first book has been published, I think this is a good thing. One of them is fairly old (from the 80s). There are quite a few historical fiction but there are a variety of times and places. There are also cross genres such as historical fantasy fiction and historical mystery. Some things all the books have in common is that the stories move quickly and they all feature girls who are adventurous.
Adventurous girls will find loads to read here Anna :)
ReplyDeleteThis blog is fantastic, I wish I could have found something like this when I was younger.
ReplyDeleteI love that you've broken up your annotations into headings, it's like primary school/lower-high-school book reports, so it's a format girls will find pretty accessible.
The books are all quite relevant, and look to be really interesting, well done!
